Public Safety Power Shutoffs in Oregon
Since 2020, Oregon utilities have used planned shutoffs during dangerous fire weather. Areas most affected include the Cascade foothills, the Columbia Gorge, Southern Oregon and parts of Central Oregon. Shutoffs usually come with a day or two of notice, so sign up for your utility's outage alerts.
- Keep phones and medical devices charged when red-flag warnings are issued.
- Know how to open your garage door manually.
- If you rely on a well, store water: the pump stops when the power does.
Keep the lights on next time
A home battery switches on automatically when the grid goes down, with no fuel and no noise. Paired with solar, it recharges every sunny day, so multi-day shutoffs don't drain it the way a generator burns fuel.
