Who provides power in Grants Pass?

Grants Pass sits in one of the highest wildfire-risk areas in Oregon, served by Pacific Power. Fire-season line settings and late-summer storms make summer outages more common here than in most of the state.

Why Grants Pass loses power

The storms and grid conditions behind most outages in Southern Oregon, and what they mean for backup power at home.

  • Fire season

Southern Oregon has some of the highest wildfire risk in the state. Pacific Power uses Enhanced Safety Settings across high-risk areas, so lines trip off quickly when something contacts them. Expect more summer outages, especially in the foothills.

  • Lightning and wind

Late-summer thunderstorms bring lightning and gusts that damage lines, sometimes across thousands of homes at once.

  • Smoke-season heat

Outages during heat waves and wildfire smoke are the hardest to ride out, because you need air filtration and cooling exactly when the grid is stressed.

Backup power

How long a battery lasts in Grants Pass

Grid-tied solar shuts off during an outage. A home battery keeps your essentials running automatically, with no fuel and no noise, and solar recharges it every day the grid is down.

Essentials on one battery
~20 hrs
Solar recharge, December
10.4 kWh/day
Solar recharge, July
37.9 kWh/day

Assumes a 10 kWh battery, essentials averaging 0.5 kW (refrigerator, lights, internet, furnace fan, phones) and a 7 kW array, using NREL PVWatts production data for Grants Pass. In December, solar covers about 87% of a day of essentials, so winter outages lean on the battery.
