Who provides power in Astoria?

Astoria is served by Pacific Power. It's often the first Oregon city hit by winter storms coming in off the Pacific, and wind on the hills above town brings down trees across lines.

We link straight to each utility's official map, because outage data changes by the minute. Not sure which utility you have? It's printed on your bill.

Why Astoria loses power

The storms and grid conditions behind most outages on the Oregon Coast, and what they mean for backup power at home.

  • Winter windstorms

Atlantic-style storms hit the coast first, with gusts that regularly topple trees across lines. Coastal outages cluster from November through February.

  • Transmission dependence

Many coastal towns are fed by a small number of transmission lines over the Coast Range. When one of those fails, whole communities go dark at once.

  • Slower restoration

Crews have long drives and narrow highways to reach damage, so multi-day outages are more common than in the valley.

Backup power

How long a battery lasts in Astoria

Grid-tied solar shuts off during an outage. A home battery keeps your essentials running automatically, with no fuel and no noise, and solar recharges it every day the grid is down.

Essentials on one battery
~20 hrs
Solar recharge, December
7.2 kWh/day
Solar recharge, July
31.4 kWh/day

Assumes a 10 kWh battery, essentials averaging 0.5 kW (refrigerator, lights, internet, furnace fan, phones) and a 7 kW array, using NREL PVWatts production data for Astoria. In December, solar covers about 60% of a day of essentials, so winter outages lean on the battery.
