2025 Might Be the Smartest Time to Go Solar—Before Federal Incentives Are at Risk
At National Solar, we're proud to help Oregon homeowners take control of their energy future with clean, reliable solar power. But with shifting political winds in Washington D.C., many are wondering: Will the 30% Federal Solar Tax Credit still be around much longer?
As of May 2025, the full 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit—also known as the federal solar tax credit—is still available. But changes could be on the horizon, and that has a lot of homeowners thinking, “Should I go solar now before the incentives change?” Here’s what you need to know.
What’s Happening with the Solar Tax Credit?
The 30% federal tax credit was extended through 2032 by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)—a landmark clean energy bill. But with a new administration in the White House and a Republican-controlled Congress, the IRA and its incentives are now under review.
There are several possible outcomes:
- A phased reduction starting as soon as 2026.
- New requirements, such as minimum domestic content for eligibility.
- Or in a worst-case scenario, a repeal of the IRA at the end of 2025.
While no changes have happened yet, many in the industry believe the 30% credit could be on borrowed time.
Why Acting Now Makes Sense
If you’ve been considering solar, waiting for political certainty could cost you thousands. The average solar project in Oregon takes 8–12 weeks from contract to installation. That means if changes come late this year, you may not be able to get your system installed in time to lock in the current incentives.
At National Solar, we’re seeing increased urgency from homeowners across Oregon who want to secure their 30% tax credit while it’s still guaranteed.
What Does That 30% Credit Look Like for You?
Let’s say your solar system (including battery storage) costs $30,000. The current tax credit would be worth $9,000 back on your taxes the year it’s installed. That’s a substantial savings that goes directly back into your pocket.
Plus, Oregon homeowners may qualify for additional incentives:
- Net Metering – get credited for excess energy you send back to the grid, with bill credits from participating utility companies.
- State Incentives from Energy Trust of Oregon - get incentives for switching to solar or battery storage systems in Oregon.
- Local utility company incentives - some utility companies offer additional incentives for switching to solar
Solar Is Still a Smart Move—Even Beyond the Tax Credit
- Utility rates in Oregon keep rising—solar helps protect you from those increases.
- We use top-tier equipment, like REC solar panels, Generac battery systems, and Enhpase battery systems
- You’ll get peace of mind with our 25-year warranty and status as a ProTrust Installer with REC.
- Low interest financing options are available, and if interest rates fall even more later, you can always refinance your solar loan.
